Metaphysical
The Technicolors
The Technicolors present Metaphysical as a culmination of years spent crafting a sonically diverse yet cohesive work. According to guitarist Sean Silverman, the band felt “a big weight lifted” after completing the album, given its extended production period. The lengthy process allowed the group to explore and expand their signature sound, leading to what they consider a defining release.
Released in 2017, Metaphysical draws heavily from the influences that initially shaped the band—90s Brit-pop and fuzzed-out psychedelia—but with a fresh edge. Known for songs like “Neon Roses” and “Congratulations, You’re a Doll,” the band incorporates these influences with “this dreamy, nostalgic vibe” that has resonated with fans, as Smiley put it.
Brennan Smiley, the band’s lead singer, recalls how the song “Neon Roses” emerged from an unplanned moment that captured their attention. Experimenting with a new pedal, he played a few notes that instantly evoked a “neon” quality, inspiring what would become one of the album's standout tracks.
I literally plugged it in and the first note I hit was that ‘duh-duh-duh’ sound […] there was something about that, that sounded electric to me. I just had this title ‘Neon Roses’ and a little melody and the song just evolved from that guitar sound.

Smiley also reflected on the band’s direction, noting that creating a full album with a “common thread” was a meaningful endeavor: “People are single-driven now,” he said, “but the idea of releasing an album with a story or flow gives it value.” This dedication to a unified project offers fans more than individual tracks; it immerses them in an introspective journey woven into Metaphysical.
I think the feeling of being able to take what was in our brains for so long and present it in a live setting […] was really important to us. It really felt like a relief.
